Work out concentration, volume and insulin-syringe units for any lyophilised research compound. Beginner friendly, with step-by-step diagrams. Strictly for laboratory research use only.
Printed on the vial label, e.g. 5 mg or 10 mg.
The diluent volume you draw into the vial.
Switch between micrograms (mcg) and milligrams (mg). 1 mg = 1000 mcg.
Concentration = vial strength ÷ water volume. Volume = target ÷ 1000 ÷ concentration. Units are shown on a U-100 insulin syringe scale (100 units = 1 ml).
Four steps, illustrated. Work in a clean environment and let the diluent run down the vial wall rather than jetting onto the powder.
Let the vial reach room temperature. Swab both rubber stoppers with an alcohol wipe and allow to dry.
Draw 2 ml of bacteriostatic water into a syringe, keeping the needle sterile.
Angle the needle so water runs down the inside wall of the vial onto the powder. Never spray directly.
Swirl gently until clear — do not shake. Store reconstituted solution refrigerated at 2–8°C.
U-100 syringe units for common vial and water combinations.

Reconstitution is the laboratory process of adding a diluent — typically bacteriostatic water — to a lyophilised (freeze-dried) peptide powder so it forms a solution of known concentration for research measurement.
A U-100 insulin syringe is graduated in 100 units per 1 ml, so 1 unit = 0.01 ml. The calculator converts your target amount into both millilitres and U-100 units so you can read the barrel directly.
More diluent gives a lower concentration and larger, easier-to-measure volumes; less diluent gives higher concentration and smaller volumes. Most researchers choose a volume that puts the target amount between 10 and 50 units on a U-100 syringe.
Concentration (mg/ml) = vial strength (mg) ÷ diluent volume (ml). Volume required (ml) = target amount (mcg) ÷ 1000 ÷ concentration (mg/ml).
Most dosing pens move 1 unit (0.01 ml on a U-100 scale) per click, though some move 2 units or 0.5 unit. Amount per click = units per click ÷ 100 × concentration (mg/ml). The calculator's pen mode does this for you and shows the clicks needed, the amount per click, and how many clicks a vial contains.
