Identity by mass spectrometry (MS). HPLC tells you how pure a sample is; it doesn't independently confirm what the sample is. Mass spectrometry measures molecular weight to confirm the compound's identity matches its labelling. A rigorous COA includes both — purity and identity are separate checks answering separate questions.
Batch numbers. Every production run varies slightly. A batch-specific COA — not a generic one reused across every sale — means the documentation actually describes the vial in front of you, not just "a sample we once tested." This matters for reproducibility if you're citing material sourcing in your own research documentation.
Red flags worth knowing:
- No batch number tying the COA to your specific order
- Purity stated as a range ("95–99%") rather than a tested figure
- No test date, or a date far removed from your order
- A COA available only on request, buried behind a support ticket, rather than published per product
Storage and stability of research peptides
Most research peptides are supplied lyophilised (freeze-dried) rather than in solution, because dried peptide material is considerably more stable at ambient temperature during transit than material already in solution.
Peptides in solution degrade at rates that depend on temperature, light exposure and the sequence itself — which is why stability is treated as a controlled and documented variable in laboratory records rather than assumed. Suppliers should state storage conditions (typically refrigerated or frozen and protected from light) and dispatch using packaging suited to realistic UK transit times.
